Why We Have A Love Of Coaching

By Sam Hannah, CEO

I remember the first netball team I ever coached. I remember my first clients, in both personal styling and wellbeing coaching.

But mostly, I remember how coaching made me feel. What a privilege it was, and still is, to be trusted to help someone unpack their story, and to meet them exactly where they are, whatever state they’re in. It made me feel part of something greater than myself.

I’ve always had a gift for listening deeply, for making people feel seen, heard and genuinely unjudged. So I’ve made it my life’s work to explore that gift and strengthen it.

The responsibility that comes with it is never lost on me. Complete strangers open up and share their most vulnerable parts with me in passing moments, standing in a supermarket aisle or sitting beside me on a plane.

Whoever they are, I want them to feel safe in my energy field. This is why I coach. Whatever state someone is in, I see their beauty, their love and their potential.

This is why I have a Love of Coaching. How about you?

Celebrating you on Love of Coaching Day

On 30 November, ANZCAL is celebrating Love of Coaching Day.

Sharn Rayner, our Strategic Director, and I wanted a day that simply says thank you. Thank you to the coaches who show up for their clients week after week. Thank you for the quiet breakthroughs no one else sees, and for the courage it takes to build a practice from the ground up.

Across Australia and New Zealand, coaches are doing magnificent work. You are helping people find their voice, heal, lead, and live with more purpose. That work ripples out into families, workplaces and communities. It deserves to be celebrated.

How ANZCAL sees coaching

We see coaching as a profession, not a pastime. In Australia and New Zealand, coaching is unregulated, so anyone can call themselves a coach. That is exactly why standards matter.

Sharn and I built ANZCAL to hold three things at the centre of everything we do:

  • High standards, so clients can trust that an accredited coach has demonstrated real capability and ethical practice.
  • A strong coaching community, where coaches learn from each other, share openly and never feel they are building alone.
  • Support for growth, both for you as a coach and for the business that sustains your work.

In coaching, and in how we show up for you, we value:

  • Integrity. We do what we say, and we hold standards that protect the people we coach and the profession we love.
  • Curiosity. We coach from a place of not knowing, asking before assuming, and we stay lifelong learners.
  • Professional courage. We have the honest conversations, make the difficult calls and keep evolving how coaching is practised.
  • Whole-person development. We care about the whole human, body, mind, heart and business, for our clients and for ourselves as coaches.

A profession on the rise

Coaching is growing fast, here at home and around the world.

  • Oceania grew 42% in three years. The number of coach practitioners in Oceania, which includes Australia and New Zealand, rose 42% between 2019 and 2022, to around 3,700 coaches.[1]
  • Australasian coaching is a significant industry. Coaches in Oceania earned an estimated A281million(NZ307 million) from coaching in 2022. Average annual coaching income was A84,600(NZ92,500), above the global average of A76,000(NZ83,100).[1][4]
  • Global coaching has reached a record high. There are now an estimated 122,974 coach practitioners worldwide, and the industry’s annual revenue is estimated at A8.3billion(NZ9.2 billion).[2][3][4]
  • Coaches in our region are optimistic. In 2025, 60% of coaches in Oceania expected to gain more clients in the year ahead, and 55% expected their annual revenue to grow.[3]

Growth brings opportunity. It also brings responsibility. As more people call themselves coaches, clients need a clear way to recognise quality, and coaches need a professional home that helps them thrive.

Play Coaching Bingo

To celebrate, we’ve created Coaching Bingo, a playful way to invest in yourself, your practice and your wellbeing in the lead-up to Love of Coaching Day.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Download your Bingo card. See below.
  2. Complete the tasks. The card has 16 tasks across four columns. Column 1 tasks are worth 1 point each, column 2 are worth 2, column 3 are worth 3 and column 4 are worth 4, up to 40 points per card.
  3. Tick them off. Tasks range from logging your coaching hours and attending a supervision session to practising a mindful technique every day for a month. ANZCAL members and non-members alike can play.
  4. Play more than once. Finished a card? Start another. You can play on more than one Bingo card, and every point counts.
  5. Send it in. Email your completed card(s) to support@anzcal.org by 29th of November 2026

The coach with the highest Bingo points will be celebrated on Love of Coaching Day, 30 November 2026.
